Win on Waste Launches Pilot Programme to collect Medicines Blister Packaging in Poole

Poole-based waste and recycling charity Win on Waste has today launched a pilot project aimed at responsibly recycling the plastic/foil packaging commonly found in medicines. Thanks to funding from the DPD Eco Fund, this waste will now be accepted at most Win on Waste sessions, starting with Hamworthy Library on Saturday 4th September.

Medicines blister packaging is commonly made of a mix of materials, which is hard to separate and recycle meaning the majority of this waste either finds its way to landfill, or is incorrectly included with kerbside recycling. This pilot project will send this waste to recycling specialist ReWorked where it will be separated, shredded and turned into plastic board which can then be made into products such as benches, picnic tables or garden planters.

Stacey Woods, Business Manager for Win on Waste said ‘There are a huge number of medicines blister packets used every day – with conservative estimates suggesting that 70 paracetamol tablets are sold per person, per year in the UK, that’s nearly 1.5 million items of plastic heading to landfill in the BCP area for that single drug alone.’

She continued, ‘Our aim is to use this pilot programme to assess the level of demand for responsible disposal of this waste, and use a combination of fundraising and sponsorship to ensure that it is able to continue in the long term.’

Medicines blister packaging is currently collected nationally by Superdrug and Terracycle, but there is very little coverage in the Poole area. Win on Waste aims to close this gap at their monthly waste collection sessions, which are listed on their website.

Win on Waste is a Poole-based waste and recycling charity which has been helping local people take control of their household waste since 2014. Collected items, including crisp packets, Pringles tubes and plastic milk bottle tops are directed out of landfill and the recycling system and towards charitable organisations. 13 good causes benefit from collection sessions on a monthly basis, including charities researching childhood brain tumours and breast cancer, International aid charities and Win on Waste themselves.

Win on Waste Awarded Funding from The Arnold Clark Community Fund

Win on Waste is thrilled to announce that we have been awarded a funding grant by The Arnold Clark Community Fund!

This grant of £1000 will help us to continue our ongoing work of rebuilding our waste collection network, which was forced to close due to Covid-19.

Arnold Clark Automobiles Ltd is one of the largest car dealer groups in Europe. But it all started with just one showroom – opened in Glasgow, Scotland, back in 1954.

Sir Arnold Clark, the founder of the company, left the Royal Air Force and used his demob money to buy a Morris Ten Four for £70. After restoring the car to its original condition, he sold it for a profit. From this first venture, Arnold Clark began to buy and sell cars. The rest, as they say, is history…

Following our successful pilot sessions at Ashley Road, Kinson and Wimborne in June, we’re delighted to be able to hold four sessions in July!

Win on Waste is Back – and collects the equivalent weight of a four-year-old in plastic milk bottle tops!

Local waste and recycling charity Win on Waste ran volunteer-led waste collection sessions this weekend for the first time since the start of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Residents in Wimborne and at Ashley Road were able to bring their hard-to-recycle waste, such as crisp packets, Pringles tubes and plastic milk bottle tops and have them sorted and sent off to benefit a wide range of good causes.

Win on Waste Business Manager, Stacey Woods, said “Having had to suspend our sessions at the start of the pandemic, it’s fantastic to be up and running again and at the heart of the community.”

She went on, “We’ve had so many enquiries from our donors, who have carried on collecting their waste items over the last 15 months, so it’s great to see so many of them back with us today”.

The Ashley Road session alone collected 18kg of plastic milk bottle tops – the equivalent weight of the average four-year-old child – which will now be sent to the Museum of East Dorset. 11kg of Tassimo coffee pods also came through the doors, which will be directed to the Wiltshire Air Ambulance and their fundraising efforts.

Now Confirmed! Win on Waste Kinson running in June.

We’re delighted to be able to confirm that our Win on Waste recycling session in Kinson will be up and running again from Saturday 26th June.

Based at Kinson Library, the session will run from 10.30-11.30 and you can bring any of the items listed on the poster below, which will benefit a large number of local charities, including 24th Bournemouth Scouts, Against Breast Cancer, The Museum of East Dorset, Ellie’s Fund and Wiltshire Air Ambulance – along with ourselves, of course!

We would appreciate it if all items could be sorted in advance of the session, please be mindful of social distancing and don’t forget your mask!

We’re on the way back!

After an extended break that we didn’t quite intend to be so long, Win on Waste is finally on its way back!

We’re delighted to be able to let you know that our waste collection sessions in Wimborne (Allendale Centre) and at Ashley Road (inside Ashley Road Co-op) will go ahead on Saturday 12th June.

Each session will run from 10.30-12.00, and we’d ask you to please bear with us as we adjust to our Covid safety measures – which include wearing a mask, social distancing and asking that your items are sorted before you arrive on the day. This will help us keep everyone moving in and out of the session quickly, and will help our volunteers in moving the waste items on after the session.

At the Wimborne session, you may bring any of the following:

Win on Waste receives funding from Wessex Water

Win on Waste has received funding from the Wessex Water Foundation to combat social isolation for local people who are housebound or currently shielding.

The foundation’s Recovery Fund aims to support local organisations and charities affected by the Covid-19 (coronavirus) pandemic, helping them to support their communities and build resilience for the future.

Win on Waste has been undertaking projects to benefit local people in the BCP and Dorset Council areas since 2013. With a primary focus on waste and recycling, Win on Waste is responsible for running 19 waste collection sessions in Dorset and in 2019-2020 helped local residents remove 3400 bags of waste from landfill and kerbside recycling. The Coronavirus pandemic has forced the charity to suspend these in-person sessions for the time being.

Stacey Woods, Win on Waste Business Manager, said: ‘This grant of £650 will be put to use to help us combat social isolation in people who may be shielding due to Covid-19, or might be otherwise housebound, by asking them to nurse ailing house plants back to health.’

The goal of the project is to fully support volunteers in caring for donated house plants that may otherwise have been thrown away, allowing us to provide meaningful occupation and community outreach to isolated people, while removing the plants themselves from among common household waste.

The Wessex Water Foundation is a multi-million-pound initiative, launched in June 2020, which provides a dedicated funding stream for projects across the region.

It is run in partnership with the Somerset, Wiltshire, Dorset and Quartet Community Foundations and from April 2021 it will provide at least half a million pounds of funding every year to support local community groups, environmental projects, and charities helping those who are suffering the consequences of poverty through low income or unemployment.

Welcome to Win on Waste

Win on Waste is the new name for Ideas2Action!

We started Ideas2Action on 31 October 2013 and now have 6 trustees, 67 volunteers and one part-time member of staff.

Our first project in 2014 was Win-on-Waste – Canford Heath.  Following on from that we expanded our We Need That recycling directory into Bournemouth.  Since then we have gradually increased our project portfolio so we now have 16 monthly Win on Waste sessions across Bournemouth, Christchurch, Poole, Corfe Mullen, Wimborne and a drop off point at Holton Lee.

Our We Need That directory has a sister directory called Decluttering?  We Need That which is aimed at people who are having a clear out and rather than take items to the tip or throw them in the bin, they can refer to the directory and offer them to a good cause.

As well as recycling projects in 2016, we ran Hunt the House: are your house numbers emergency friendly?  Funded by the Dorset Police & Crime Commissioner’s Safer Dorset Fund, this project ran as a pilot on Canford Heath in Poole and showed the importance of having visible house numbers so that the emergency services are able to find homes quickly and possibly even save a life.
